Whether you have hardwood, vinyl, laminate, carpet or tile, a few simple precautions can keep your floors looking their best throughout December and beyond.

1. Use Entrance Mats (Inside & Outside)

The biggest cause of winter floor damage is what comes in from outside: water, snow, grit, and salt. Place heavy-duty outdoor mats at every entrance and absorbent indoor mats just inside the door. Together, they trap dirt before it reaches the floors.

Top tip:
Choose mats with rubber backings to prevent slipping and moisture seepage.

The days are slowly getting longer and (for some of us!) February brings romance with… Valentine’s Day!

A day of love, so why not share the love in the house with a bit of pampering for our floors? Whether you have hardwood, tile, or carpeted floors, you can take some extra steps to care for them to ensure their longevity and keep them looking beautiful for longer.

Valentine's Day and candlelit dinners go hand-in-hand and despite candles creating a warm and cosy atmosphere, they pose a risk to your floors. To protect your floors from wax drips, place candle holders or trays under the candles. This will catch any wax that may drip and prevent it from staining or damaging your floors.

If wax does drip on your carpet, here are some tips from Maltby’s of Chester on how to care for your carpet this February:

Step 1: Freeze the wax

Press a bag of ice or ice pack onto the dried wax for about 10 minutes and allow the wax to freeze and harden up. Make sure it isn’t getting wet from your ice pack, as moisture will make the wax drips harder to remove (use a tea towel to prevent this if needed).

Step 2: Scrape the wax off

Once the wax is frozen, use a knife (not sharp a butter knife will do) to scrape as much wax as possible off the carpet or rug. Be gentle during this process so that you don’t fray your carpet! Then, simply vacuum up the wax pieces that you scraped off.

Step 3: Heat and absorb the stubborn wax

Now, you can target the wax that has dripped deep into your carpet fabric. Place a paper towel, paper bag or tea towel on top of the remaining candle wax. Turn your iron on at its lowest temperature setting and make sure the steam function is turned off. Run the iron over the paper or towel several times; the wax will start to heat up.

As the towel starts to absorb the wax, reposition it several times so that the clean areas can continue to pick up more remnants. Continue this process until all of the wax is absorbed.

Step 4: Spot clean your carpet or rug

The last step in removing wax stains from your floors is to use a carpet shampoo on the affected area. This will be particularly important if the wax is coloured, as the dye could stain your carpet. Gently dab the stain, taking care not to damage the carpet fibres, until the last traces of wax and colour are removed. Once your carpet has air-dried, use your vacuum to restore the carpet texture. In most cases, your carpet will look as good as new!

The origins of tile flooring in Britain stems back to the medieval period, in which monks during this period would produce decorative clay tiles that would be used in monasteries, abbeys and royal palaces. During the nineteenth century Victorian archaeologists excavated these medieval sites resulting in a Gothic revival in Victorian Britain. This led to the Victorians adding their own flare to tile flooring such as porcelain instead of clay, where by Herbert Minton, an enthusiast in porcelain tile manufacture, was commission by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to create a pavement for Osborne House.

Relevant Regals

Royalty Realness

The earliest documentation of parquet flooring being used in Britain was at Denmark House in London (later became Somerset House). It was also installed in the Queen’s bed chamber at Ham House, in 1673, but beyond these regal residencies it was not frequently seen.

In response to Earth Day which took place on the 22nd of this month we thought we might introduce you to options for flooring that are eco-friendly. With climate change being at the forefront of this generation's conversation, we believe it is important to provide alternative options in which more and more homeowners are adopting in acknowledgement for ‘going green’.

Before deciding on the right flooring for your home or business it is important to consider what materials have been used in the manufacture process and whether they are naturally occurring and renewable. Is it composed of recycled materials? Has it been sustainably sourced? Is it biodegradable?

Ideally long-lasting flooring that will be in your home long term is environmentally friendly, however if you like to change up your interior décor every so often then materials that are biodegradable are a much better choice than synthetics.

As we have settled into the year of 2022, here at the Maltby's of Chester we thought we would share our January Jubilations by announcing our 75th anniversary.

Where better to begin, than where it all began?

It was exiting this decade when we were first found our feet, and the world looked vastly different to the norms of today. In fact, Brook Street has seen its fair share of change:

Around this time, it would have been popular to see rugs in homes over carpets, especially with the ‘make do and mend attitude.’ It was only nearing the end of this decade when textile machinery was improving and the use of materials in carpet shifted to something still commonly used to this day, Nylon and Acrylic yarn, which ultimately changed the carpet industry forever.

Protecting your floor this Christmas

Christmas is one of the most wonderful times of the year however, your floors may not think the same.

This time of year, festive parties are in full swing, excited children are chaotic, there are fallen tree needles and turkey fat. Big get togethers are always so much fun, it’s the clean up afterwards that’s not quite as thrilling, nor is the thought of damaged flooring. Luckily, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of damage and protect your floor and carpet.

Ohhh, Christmas Tree

Nothing can top having a real tree in your home at Christmas, from the character it gives to a room, to the piney aroma it gives off. However, a real tree can cause problems for your floor in several ways. First of all, try not to water it too much as this can cause damp and mould in your carpet or warping in your laminate flooring. Also, as nice as pine needles look on a tree, they can hurt to stand on and the green can transfer on to light coloured carpets and stain them. Why not stand your tree on a rug to prevent marks on your floor?

Let’s party

With friends and family coming around to party and join in the festivities, flooring can accidentally get damaged. It may be worthwhile to invest in a Christmas rug over the festive period to place on your flooring to avoid scratches from shoes or furniture.

Shine bright

In the winter many people often light more candles throughout the house for festive ambience and warmth however, it’s important to take extra care especially if you are having more guests inside. Candle wax can damage flooring and removing it can also cause issues. Ideally, keep candles in a safe place away from floorings and away from surface edges to avoid them being knocked off.

Christmas Dinner

One of the biggest worries when having people over is the spillages on carpets, with LVT flooring or laminate this isn’t quite as much of an issue as the mess can be wiped up. However, with carpets, there is the possibility of something staining the floor, whether that be, alcohol or cranberry sauce. As soon as a spillage occurs try to wipe it, wipe, don’t ever rub a carpet. Or vacuum it to get up the worst of the mess. Or even leave dustpans or serviettes around so accidents can quickly be cleaned, and guests can get back to partying.

Here at Maltby’s of Chester we’ve missed people popping into our Brook Street store and seeing your brand new flooring designs during the COVID-19 pandemic. On Thursday 18th July Channel 4’s fifth episode of ‘George Clarke’s Old House, New Home’ featured the renovation of a property on The Wirral.

At Maltby’s of Chester we offer unrivalled expertise, including our specialist installation service. We were invited by the renovation series to showcase our skills to provide our unique services for the installation of a carpet in the Wirral-based property.

For the show, we were asked to provide our skills for the fitting of a carpeted stairs runner. The owners of the property featuring in the programme required a blend of traditional and contemporary style by using a simple carpet in a light grey finish.

While dusting and de-cluttering come a standard, many of us forget to give our trusty carpets a little extra T.L.C, so here at Maltby’s we’ve compiled some helpful tips.

Complete deep clean

The ultimate in luxury carpet care is obviously having your carpet professionally cleaned by one of the following methods;

Carpet shampoo is an effective method. However, it’s important to not apply too much, or drench the carpet. Use sparingly, and avoid scrubbing the carpet too fiercely.

Steam Cleaning dries more quickly and brilliant for large surfaces.

You can also dry clean carpets professionally they use dry chemical compounds or cleaning solvents.

Au-natirel alternative

Want to bust stains but keep chemicals and powdered cleaning products to a minimum? Try these supermarket essentials, which are kind to your carpet and wallet.

Baking soda can be used to remove stains, but it’s also great for absorbing nasty smells

Ice is the best solution for any stuck chewing gum

Soda water or tonic water helps remove coffee stains

Salt is ideal for getting rid of mud and for soaking up fresh stains

Vinegar and warm water can also be applied with a cloth to get rid of just about any smelly stain

Top Tip

Always dab a stain, never rub or scrub it before any products have been applied as this will smudge the stain and spread it further. Rubbing will also push whatever caused the stain deeper into the fibres, making them harder to remove in the long run.

Create new house rules

Finally, prevention is always better than cure. So why not establish some new house rules after your spring clean?
